Last summer, Hannah Thomas (EH. 22-24) embarked on a medical internship in Kenya, partially made possible due to a grant from the Malvernian Society. Before leaving Malvern this year, Hannah spoke to the Society about her trip and the experiences it gave her.
Hannah said: “I went to Kenya for a medical internship, where I got to experience different hospitals as well as the culture of an East African country - I had a brilliant time!” Hannah spoke of experiencing multiple facets of the medical sphere, from the complexities of childbirth and paediatric care to the demands of palliative treatment.
Hannah told us how she helped to treat malnutrition in children and how common this is across Eastern Africa. She explained how newly built surgeries have helped to combat this and many other diseases. Throughout her internship, Hannah not only experienced life on the front lines of medical care, but also managed to experience parts of the Kenyan culture, partaking in a safari and visiting an animal orphanage.
Hannah reached out to the Malvernian Society before undertaking her trip, to see if the Society could help with a financial donation towards the cost of her internship. We were delighted to be able to support this initiative, allowing Hannah the incredible opportunity her internship provided.
To sum up her experience, Hannah said: “I had an absolutely brilliant time, so I thank you for your donation to help me getting there!”
As an OM, if you are partaking in a charitable event or cause, the Malvernian Society may be able to assist with a small grant towards your activity. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us for further information: [email protected].
